A tiger’s wife, a deathless man, Punjabi women & a murder mystery case! Jee delves into two very different worlds with these #minireviews : #TheTigersWife by #TeaObreht #RandomHouse @randomhouse #magicalrealism #literaryfiction & #EroticStoriesForPunjabiWomen by #BalliKaurJaswal #AsianAmericanLiteratureFiction #WilliamMorrow @WMmorrowBooks

Title/Author: The Tiger’s Wife: A Novel by Tea Obreht

Publisher: Random House

Verdict: Read if you like magical realism!

The death of her grandfather led Natalia to retrieve the items that he left behind. That journey took her mind back to her days spent with him and the stories he told her about his encounters with the deathless man and the tiger’s wife.

It took me awhile to be fully immersed in the story, to get used to the style and idea of this novel. But once I got into it, the tales of the tiger, his wife, the deathless man and the apothecary started to grow on me

Even though there weren’t any concrete plot or strong characters, her skillful storytelling kept me going. All in all, I’d say it’s between a pick and so-so for me, leaning more towards a pick. If this is food, I’d say it’s very much an acquired taste.

If you’re one for dreamy, magical realism with vivid imagery and lyrical prose, you might enjoy this! I’m excited to read her upcoming novel ‘Inland‘!

Title/Author: Erotic Stories for Punjabi Women: A Novel

Publisher: William Morrow

Verdict: YES! READ! NOW!

A reluctant sister on a matchmaking mission got herself tangled up in a murder mystery case when she took up a job as a teacher for a creative writing class

One of the best books I’ve read so far! It had all the ingredients I love – a great plot, wonderful characters (love love those Punjabi widows!), emotional, funny, thoughtful, provocative and unbiased! This book made me cry too – there were some very touching scenes… Being able to put all that into a book and making it such a great page turner take great skills and talent. Kudos to the author!

I can also totally relate to the traditional upbringing and teachings brought up in this novel. I was constantly told – don’t talk loudly or laugh so loudly because I’m a girl; don’t whistle; don’t climb trees; you can’t be with him because he’s of a different race, etc. But I was quite a rebel and stubborn like a rock then, so it didn’t quite affect me lol

All in all, a fantastic book! If you haven’t read this, please do!

Have you read any of these books? If yes, what did you think? If you haven’t, do you intend to? Please share with me your thoughts!

I read The Tiger’s Wife as well and have to agree with you that an acquired taste would be perfect to describe it. Inland sounds interesting. I do enjoy historical fiction so I may put it on my TBR.

Scarlett…!! Ok! So I googled. Good news? Yes, we can loan our kindle books to friends, but only if the book has the ‘LOAN’ option, which leads me to…the not-so-good-news…the punjabi widows book doesn’t have that option!!! Booohoooo 😦
