More Thoughts on Abortion…

The ‘debate’ continues….

By Denis:
Banning abortion basically aims to achieve one thing: limiting the parents’ lives in favour of the embryo’s. If you admit that forcing a woman to abort against her wishes is wrong, then by the same token you cannot force her NOT to abort.

This is not only about choice, but about life as well. Giving birth to a child comes with consequences and responsibilities. Forcing a woman to give birth when she and her family are not prepared, willing, equipped or able to raise the child often brings more harm than good to the lives of both the child and the parents.

What about the embryo’s rights, some people will inevitably ask. I think it has as much right as a chicken’s liver. The fact that it could grow into the next Einstein if allowed to live is irrelevant. As Leonard Peikoff, a philosopher, puts it:

‘If we are to accept the equation of the potential with the actual and call the embryo an “unborn child,” we could, with equal logic, call any adult an “undead corpse” and bury him alive or vivisect him for the instruction of medical students.’

From a practical perspective, a ban will not prevent people desperate to abort from doing so. It would only drive the practice underground where untrained practitioners could endanger the life of the mother.

I’m not saying that everyone should decide to abort without thinking, nor that people should be encouraged to abort. It should be a decision made with serious thought – and I’m sure it is in the majority of cases – but it is the decision for the parents to make, and not the government.

Letting the parents decide is not only the right approach practically, but morally as well.

And here’s a good link:

By Xuan:
It’s easy for some people to say ‘abort’. They aren’t the one ‘carrying’ the baby. They aren’t aware the emotional turmoil that this person is facing. Feeling another ‘life’ in you does change your perception in many ways. Making a decision and to face whatever the consequences after, is never easy.

By Feng:
If my partner doesn’t want the baby….I don’t think I want the baby….because…if I were to keep the baby, it will remind me of the irresponsible partner I had. And I wouldn’t want this baby to be fatherless either. I will choose to abort the baby…and also will break up with my partner…

By Paul:
If it’s a rape case, the decision is obvious. Abort. You wouldn’t wanna be reminded of a bad experience.
